Acid Tanker Lining Refurbishment Using Novolac Epoxy Vinyl Ester Coatings
What Was the Brief?
A road tanker operator required the internal lining of an acid tanker barrel to be fully restored and returned to specification. Years of exposure to aggressive chemical products had placed significant demands on the existing lining system, making refurbishment essential to maintain protection, compliance, and long-term operational performance.
The brief was clear: remove any degraded lining material, prepare the internal steel surfaces to the required industry standard, and install a high-performance chemical-resistant lining system capable of withstanding demanding acid service conditions. All works needed to be completed under controlled workshop conditions while ensuring the tanker could be returned to service with confidence in its long-term durability and integrity.
What Did Sprayglass Do?
Sprayglass International completed the refurbishment at its specialist Kellington facility, delivering a comprehensive lining restoration process. Key works included:
- Masking all external areas and components not requiring treatment to protect surrounding structures and fittings
- Grit blasting all internal surfaces to Swedish Standard SA2.5, achieving a minimum surface profile of 75 microns to ensure optimum coating adhesion
- Applying Sprayglass LP Primer at 20–25 microns dry film thickness to provide a stable holding and prefabrication base
- Installing multiple coats of Sprayglass SG-459 glass flake reinforced Novolac Epoxy Vinyl Ester lining to achieve a nominal dry film thickness of 1.75mm
- Completing the system with Sprayglass Topcoat and carrying out full dry film thickness testing and spark testing to verify lining integrity
What Was the Result?
The completed refurbishment delivered a robust, chemically resistant internal lining system designed to perform in demanding acid transportation environments. Additional reinforcement to welds, nozzle connections, flange faces, and critical edge details further enhanced long-term protection and durability.
The tanker was returned to service with a fully restored lining system that met specification and provided confidence in continued operational performance. This project demonstrates how Sprayglass International’s specialist surface preparation, coating expertise, and advanced lining systems can extend asset life, improve reliability, and protect critical equipment operating in highly corrosive environments.
