Storage Tank Refurbishment for Sedamyl UK

Industrial storage tank lining

What Was the Brief?

Sedamyl required the refurbishment of a large steel storage tank as part of ongoing expansion at its Selby facility. The tank had a capacity of approximately 2,200,000 litres and an internal surface area of around 1,020m². Over time, the asset had fallen into a derelict condition and required extensive restoration before returning to service.

The objective was to transform the structure into a fully functional storage tank supporting future production requirements. Due to the scale of the project, long-term asset protection formed a key part of the brief. Therefore, a specialist corrosion protection system was required to deliver durability, reliability, and long-term operational performance.

What Did Sprayglass Do?

Working internally from top to bottom, the refurbishment programme began with complete grit blasting of the internal steel surfaces to bare metal. This process removed existing corrosion and coatings while creating the ideal surface profile for the new protective lining system.

Following preparation, Spray Glass LP Primer was applied directly to the prepared steel substrate. Then multiple coats of Spray Glass SG-443 Glass Flake Coating were applied, a specialist lining system designed to protect steel assets from corrosive attack in demanding industrial environments.

The selected coating system delivers excellent inter-coat adhesion and long-term corrosion resistance. As a result, it is ideally suited to storage tanks, process vessels, filtration vessels, ion exchange vessels, water treatment facilities, power generation sites, and chemical processing environments.

What Was the Result?

The completed project restored the 2.2 million litre tank to full operational condition, providing Sedamyl UK with a valuable production asset. As a result, the facility now has additional capacity to support future expansion and operational growth.

The specialist glass flake lining system provides long-term protection against corrosion while extending the asset’s service life. In addition, the refurbishment helps reduce future maintenance requirements and supports long-term operational reliability. Having supported the Selby facility for many years, SprayGlass International was proud to contribute to another important phase of the site’s development, transforming a derelict structure into a fully functional part of Sedamyl UK’s operational infrastructure.
